Anyone who has dug in Aiken knows the soil is sandy - it is the sand hills, after all. The sand drains fast and works easily, and it is genuinely lighter than the heavy red clay of the Piedmont further north. That leads a lot of people to assume excavation debris here is not a weight problem. On a disposal job, it still is.
Why sandy soil still counts as heavy
Aiken sits in the sand hills of South Carolina, and while the sandy soil is lighter per cubic yard than clay, "lighter than clay" is not the same as "light." A cubic yard of damp sandy fill still weighs a great deal, and when you excavate a footing, grade a lot, dig drainage or cut in an arena base, the spoil adds up fast.
That means fill cannot be sized like ordinary debris. A container that would comfortably hold the volume of spoil from a job will be over legal transport weight long before it is full. Fill, like concrete, is a material where weight decides the container, not volume - even the sandy fill here.
The weight math that decides the container
A truck carrying a loaded roll-off has a legal road weight it cannot exceed. Work backward from that limit and a 10 yard container filled with damp sandy fill is already at or near it.
So heavy fill goes in a 10 yard, the same container we use for concrete, and never in a larger box. A 20 or 30 yard filled with fill simply could not be moved. This surprises people planning a big grading job who assume more spoil means a bigger container - in fact more spoil means more 10 yard containers, or staged loads.
Keep it dry, keep it separate
Two habits save real money on fill. First, keep it dry. The sand drains quickly, which helps, but freshly dug or rained-on fill still carries water weight, and disposal is charged by weight - so letting spoil dry before it goes in the container directly lowers the bill.
Second, keep it separate from everything else. Fill mixed into a general debris container drags the whole load's weight up and can push it over the limit while the box looks part full. A dedicated container for fill and dirt keeps both loads sensible and correctly routed.
Concrete and masonry alongside it
Concrete behaves the same way and often shows up on the same jobs. It runs to roughly two tons per cubic yard, so a 10 yard filled level with it is already at legal transport weight. Brick, block and stone are the same category.
On a demolition or hardscape-removal job producing both concrete and fill, we run dedicated 10 yard containers for the heavy material and a larger container for everything else. It is more deliveries, and it is the only arrangement that is both legal and economical.
Clean fill versus mixed debris
Kept clean, both fill and concrete can often be routed as clean fill rather than mixed waste, which is cheaper. But "clean" is strict. Clean concrete is masonry and nothing else - no timber, no protruding mesh, no rubbish. Clean fill is soil and sand without construction debris mixed in.
The moment general debris contaminates a fill or concrete load, it stops being clean fill and is charged and handled as mixed waste. So if you are going to separate the heavy material to get the container-sizing right anyway, keep it genuinely clean and capture the disposal saving too. And every load leaves secured for the haul to the county landfill, where we dispose as a permitted local operator.
Estate and arena excavation
Excavation spoil is the single most underestimated material we handle, and around Aiken's horse country there is a particular version of it: arena and paddock work. Building or regrading a riding arena moves a surprising amount of material, as do the drainage and base works that come with equestrian property. If you are digging - footings, a pool, drainage, an arena base - the volume of spoil is usually much larger than the finished surface suggests, because excavated earth bulks up as it is dug.
